Random observations from the past week

To the human eye, it's just piles of laundry on the bed. But to a cat, it's the perfect place to spend quality napping time. And if the cat is white, and the pile is black, all the better.

The trouble with having books to read is never knowing which to read next.

Soundtrack moments: You know what they are. Soundtrack moments are when, while engaging in an activity, music comes into your head that perfectly scores (or underscores) what you're doing. It's not so much that the internal music elevates your activity as it is you've reached that sort of Zen-like state in which everything is happening effortlessly and you've found your groove. The soundtrack music follows naturally.

The same music doesn't always play for the same event, and everyone's music is going to vary. Your life, at any time could be scored with "Mars" from The Planets, "Georgy Girl," "Smooth Criminal" (either version), or even "Brick House." And, like earworms, soundtrack moments can come upon you all unexpected.

I had one of those moments the other night when riding my new hybrid. It wasn't a particularly intense ride. I rode through the neighborhood a couple of times, maybe three miles, tops. About halfway through the ride, it happened -- suddenly, the overture to The Magic Flute, the end part, where the fugue is pretty much done and the allegro theme gets brought home. (Yes, it owes a little to the Mannheim style, but more to the fusion of fugue with sonata-allegro form. Very akin to the last movement of the Jupiter Symphony, for anyone who's keeping track.)

So anyway, the overture is playing in my head and the wheels are turning and everything just hit one of those soundtrack moments, when that slice of life was meant to be scored by that bit of music. Nice, when that happens.

Three of my favorite words in the English language: Tumble dry low.

Previously: Didn't we have a time?
Next Time: Help me, summer reading table. You're my only hope.
